    Hey Everyone,

I am looking to get a hold of a scope that can take great Trichome pictures. My phone is unfortunately just not the best and with my vision the jewelers loop isn’t the easiest. I am looking for something I can hookup maybe to my computer and snap some QUALITY photos. I would like to start documenting a lot of the legal bud I am finding.

If anyone can assist that would be great!

    Hey, Todd! Great question!

When Trichome judges cannabis cups, we use the following Carson scope.
    https://carson.com/product/mm-840-digital-microscope/

The image quality is pretty good, considering the low cost of the scope. It’s nice because you can either tap the top of the scope to take the photo or use your computer. We actually have photos in the Interpening book from a Carson, so they even print well.

The other scope that Max and I have both played around with is considered a coin microscope.

We were pleasantly surprised with the magnification of the scope, but what you’re looking at ultimately determines how clearly it’s able to display the product on the screen. Rounded objects, like flower, can sometimes look blurry on the sides because it’s only focusing on the center part. Flatter objects look much better, but the rounded ones still work and would be similar to the Carson scope in the scene of pixelization (is that a word? lol). You can capture photos and save them on an SD card, to then transfer to your computer for editing and organization.

Between the two, the Carson is more convenient due to the size and ability to connect it right to your computer. However, your computer will definitely get a workout if it’s running for a while. I have a MacBook Pro that I got in 2017, and it has a lower storage amount, so it filled up space fast and had my fan running after 30 minutes.

I hope this helps with your strain evaluations!!!

    Cheers,

    Chef Brandon Allen

Thank you Brandon that is very helpful! I had ordered a coin microscope actually which is why I asked this so that is cool to hear. If I do not like the outcome I will be going with the Carson thank you!

Looking forward to doing some reviews. Do you guys have a sample or sheet that you use for when you judge cups? I would love to help integrate the Trichome universe into my reviews.

    Todd

That’s a good request! I would recommend looking at one of the TAG reports from the hemp flower kit as a guide for the time being. However, I will chat with Max about creating a editable PDF for strain reviews 🙂

Perfect! I will check that out and definitely keep me posted on an editable PDF. I will be in touch as the website builds out. I think Trichome might deserve its own banner!
