Solventless / Mechanical Extraction

Hash, Bubble Hash, and Rosin are the most common solventless and mechanical extraction products.  Although some rosin companies utilize flower for their rosin extraction material, many higher purity rosin products are made from bubble hash as the extraction material.

Hash:

The term hash has multiple meanings.  In its simplest form, hash is the separation of trichome heads from the cannabis plant.  The loose, non-compacted heads are usually referred to as kief, as seen below.  Trimming cannabis flower all day?  Well, what’s all over your fingers and scissors, is hash (just not very pure)!

Bubble Hash:

As Murphy explained in the video, bubble hash is a mechanical separation of the trichome heads from the plant matter utilizing cold water, ice, and fine mesh micron bags, which allow the heads to be strained from the water.

Once the plant material is agitated and they are separated, the water is drained into various layered mesh bags that all have different size holes in them, which separate the different-sized heads.

The bubble hash is then dried and/or frozen, to remove the excess water.

Rosin:

Rosin can be made from flower or bubble hash, utilizing a Rosin Press.  Rosin utilizes high pressure and minimal heat to extract the cannabis oil, without the use of any solvents.

When bubble hash is used to make rosin, the hash is put into smaller mesh bags, allowing the hash to be pressed while expelling the oil through the bags.

The rosin image below is an example of rosin extracted from flower.  Notice the impurities and plant matter remaining in the rosin.
